Ingredients

You’ll need two sets of ingredients: one for the Bloomin’ Onion and one for the dipping sauce.

For the Bloomin’ Onion:

  • 1 large sweet Vidalia onion – peeled
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Seasonings: 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or substitute 1 cup milk mixed with 1 tsp white vinegar, then measure)
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce – adds flavor, not heat
  • Olive oil spray for misting

For the dipping sauce:

  • 3 tbsp mayonnaise (full fat for best texture)
  • 3 tbsp sour cream
  • 2 tsp ketchup
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

How to Make

This recipe is straightforward: cut the onion, coat it thoroughly, and air fry until golden and crisp.

  1. Trim the top off the peeled onion. Make 8–10 even cuts around the onion, like pie slices, stopping about 1/2″ from the root so the base stays intact. Gently separate the layers to create the “bloom.”
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the flour and dry seasonings until evenly combined. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, buttermilk, and hot sauce until smooth.
  4. Dredge the onion in the seasoned flour, making sure the flour reaches between the petals. Shake off any excess.
  5. Dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, making sure the liquid gets between the layers, then return it to the flour for a final coating.
  6. Place the prepared onion in the center of the air fryer basket, root side down. Spray liberally with olive oil spray.
  7. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 12–15 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Spray again with oil halfway through cooking for extra color and crunch.
  8. While the onion cooks, whisk all sauce ingredients together in a small bowl until smooth. Chill until ready to serve.
  9. Transfer the hot Bloomin’ Onion to a serving plate with tongs and serve immediately with the dipping sauce.

Storage and Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. The coating will soften over time, so reheat in the air fryer until warmed through and crisped up again.

Tips and Tricks

  • Peel the onion before cutting to avoid dry outer layers in the petals.
  • Work the flour and egg mixtures into every petal so each piece becomes evenly crunchy and flavorful.
  • Air fry root side down to help the onion hold together while cooking.
  • If you’re sensitive to spice, omit the hot sauce—the flavor boost is subtle and not very spicy.
