Behind This Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad Recipe

I’m a big fan of chicken bacon ranch flavor—think sliders, slow-cooker dinners, and even pizza. I also love pasta salads and crisp vegetable textures, so this recipe brings those elements together. The goal was a salad that can be served cold and includes more vegetables than many similar recipes.

This version pairs diced chicken and crispy bacon with creamy ranch dressing, shredded romaine, cheddar, and croutons for contrast. The result is a satisfying mix of textures and flavors that works well as a main dish, a side, or something to share at gatherings.

Tips from My Kitchen

  • Cook the chicken in bacon fat. Fry the bacon first and leave about two tablespoons of fat in the pan to brown the chicken for extra flavor.
  • Rinse the pasta. After draining, rinse with cool water to stop cooking and prevent sticking. This also cools the pasta before mixing.
  • Add lettuce and croutons at the last minute. To avoid sogginess, keep romaine and croutons separate until just before serving.
  • Season to taste. I use poultry seasoning on the chicken and finish the salad with a pinch of Salad Supreme. Use your preferred seasonings and adjust amounts to your liking.

Key Ingredients

This salad blends classic chicken bacon ranch components with those commonly found in pasta salads. Exact quantities are listed in the recipe card below.

  • Chicken – Tenderloins or breasts, diced into bite-sized pieces.
  • Pasta – Short shapes like rotini or fusili work well; high-protein or whole-grain pasta are good options.
  • Bacon – Cooked until crisp for salty, savory crunch.
  • Cheddar – Shredded or cubed, it adds richness and pairs with the other flavors.
  • Green onions – Mild onion flavor that complements the ranch.
  • Ranch dressing – Store-bought or homemade; the recipe includes a low-fat Greek yogurt ranch option.
  • Poultry seasoning – A seasoning blend for the chicken; Italian seasoning is a fine substitute.
  • Salad Supreme – Optional finishing seasoning to boost flavor.
  • Croutons – Roughly chopped so they mix easily and remain pleasant to chew.

Make it Your Own

This salad is highly adaptable. A few easy ways to customize it:

  • Try protein pasta. Chickpea or other high-protein pasta increases satiety.
  • Add vegetables. Bell peppers, peas, tomatoes, cucumbers, celery, or avocado are great additions; add avocado at the end to avoid browning.
  • Use rotisserie chicken. Save time by substituting shredded rotisserie chicken for cooked chicken.
  • Make homemade ranch. A Greek yogurt ranch keeps the salad lighter while adding bright flavor.

Make-Ahead Meal Prep

This salad is excellent for lunches, but keep romaine and croutons separate to prevent sogginess. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Keep romaine separate. Pack shredded romaine in a small bag and add it when ready to eat.
  • Include extra dressing. A small container of extra dressing rehydrates pasta that has absorbed dressing and refreshes the lettuce.
  • Store croutons separately. Pack croutons in a small container or bag and mix in just before serving.

Even when storing the salad as a single batch, refrigerate the romaine and croutons separately until serving.

Notes

Low Fat Greek Yogurt Ranch

Mix until smooth: 1 cup plain Greek yogurt; 1 teaspoon each dried dill, dried chives, dried parsley, garlic powder, and onion powder; 1/2 teaspoon salt; 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper; 1 tablespoon rice vinegar; and 1–2 tablespoons buttermilk or milk as needed.

Meal Prep

To prepare ahead, keep the romaine and croutons separate until serving. Pack the pasta salad in a container, romaine in a zip-top bag, and extra dressing and croutons in small containers to combine just before eating.
