Melting Snowman OREO Cookie Balls

My kids love making seasonal treats, and this year we wanted something different from our usual gingerbread men and decorated sugar cookies. We also like experimenting with hot cocoa flavors — sometimes they get adventurous! But for this project we settled on a playful twist of a classic favorite: OREO Cookie Balls made into melting snowmen.

OREO cookie balls are a holiday staple for a reason: they’re easy, crowd-pleasing, and lend themselves to fun decorations. We debated between reindeer and melting snowman designs — and the snowmen won. A quick trip to our local Fry’s (a Kroger banner store) supplied the OREOs and a few extras to assemble these cute cookie bites.

OREO makes creating festive treats simple, whether you enjoy the cookies as-is or use them in a themed recipe. You can find OREO varieties at most Kroger family stores; they’re a reliable pick for busy bakers putting together holiday snacks and desserts.

My kids and I had a blast making these Melting Snowman OREO Cookie Balls. They were both fun to assemble and delicious to eat. We’ll likely try the reindeer version next — follow along on Instagram for a sneak peek when we do.

Notes about ingredients: I used pre-made white fondant tinted orange for the carrot noses. If you can’t find black sugar pearls for eyes and buttons, mini chocolate chips are a convenient substitute.

I also made my first blog video for this recipe — I’m still learning how to put them together, so thanks for bearing with me. I hope you enjoy watching!

Ingredients

  • 1 package PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened, 8 oz.
  • 1 package OREO Cookies, finely crushed, 14.3 oz.
  • 3 packages white candy melts, melted, 12 oz. each
  • 1/4 cup orange fondant
  • Watermelon pull-and-peel candy, cut into 1-inch lengths
  • Red and green chocolate button candy
  • Black sugar pearl sprinkles or mini chocolate chips
  • Baker’s twine

Instructions

  • Mix the softened cream cheese and the finely crushed OREO cookie crumbs until well blended.
  • Shape the mixture into 48 (1-inch) balls. Place them in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm up.
  • Using a 1/8-teaspoon measure, scoop small pieces of orange fondant and divide each scoop in half. Roll each piece into a small carrot-shaped nose. Repeat until you have 48 noses. Set aside.
  • On a wax-paper lined baking sheet, place a small puddle of melted white candy melt. Dip one chilled cookie ball into the melted candy, letting excess drip off, then place the coated ball onto the puddle so it sits on a small candy base.
  • Quickly press a 1-inch piece of pull-and-peel candy on top to form earmuffs, then press a red or green chocolate button candy on each side of the pull-and-peel piece to complete the earmuffs. Add two black sugar pearls or mini chocolate chips for eyes and a small line of pearls or chips for a mouth. Press the fondant carrot nose into place and hold briefly so it adheres. If you like, add black sugar pearls as buttons on the “melted” part of the snowman. Repeat with remaining balls and candy melts.
  • Refrigerate the finished snowmen until the candy melts are firm, about 1 hour.
  • Cut lengths of baker’s twine and tie a short piece around each snowman’s neck to resemble a scarf. Trim any excess twine.

Notes

  • Store the cookie balls in the refrigerator.
